They represent a very large investment, and any sort of large investment needs to be properly protected against the random events that can occur in life. From being lost or misplaced to the stone falling out of the mounting, the last thing you want to have happen is for your very large investment to go unprotected.

If you are getting engaged, or are already engaged and do not have the ring insured, please contact your insurance agent today. There are many different ways to protect your valuable jewelry, and your agent can help you choose the option that best protects your investment.

I hope everyone has a safe, happy and romantic Valentine's Day!

It's Ice Dam Season!

While the mild winter we've had has been a blessing in many ways (it's just 1 year ago today that we were all buried under 3 feet of snow!), one of the unfortunate side effects of the relatively mild winter has been the increased risk of ice dams which can form at the edge of your roof.

An ice dam can occur in an area which isn't exposed to direct sunlight on your roof. Ice can build up in the gutter and eventually force an opening between the roofline and the gutter. When the ice melts, the runoff can damage interior walls, insulation and attic space.

If you notice unexplained water damage to walls or ceilings this winter, call us today. We can discuss the best course of action to take to not only repair the damage, but remedy the cause.

In the meantime, enjoy the weather!

Happy New Year!

From all of us here at Havlic & Associates, to all of you and your loved ones, please enjoy a safe and happy New Year! As a general rule of thumb, if you place a penny in the tread, and can see Abe Lincoln's head, it's time to replace your tires! Having worn out treads can greatly reduce your car's ability to remain stable on an icy road.

-Make sure you can see. This one seems fairly obvious, but people sometimes do forget to clear off snow and ice before driving. Make sure you give yourself enough time in the morning to clear your car so that your field of vision is not impeded. Additionally, replace your windshield wipers! They should be replaced at the beginning of winter and the beginning of spring.

-Don't rely on technology. Newer model cars might offer electronic stability control, but there is never a substitute for simple care and attention to the road. Always give yourself space between you and any other cars on the road, and always drive at speeds appropriate for the conditions.

For more tips like these, check out http://www.edmunds.com/car-safety/driving-on-snow-and-ice-10-safety-tips.html. Local law enforcement will also be stepping up their enforcement of the so called "fatal four" violations that can lead to deadly accidents, which are:

-Talking on cell phones
-Texting while driving
-Seat belt violations
-Driving under the influence

Aside from the possibility of getting a very expensive ticket, committing one of these four violations can place the safety of you and your loved ones in jeopardy. Replace batteries once a year, even if alarms are hardwired.

Test your smoke alarms at night to see if your child will wake up and respond to the alarm. Children sleep more deeply and may not wake up. If your child does not wake up to the alarm, try an alarm where you can program your voice to alert him or her.

Mount smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings since smoke rises. Ceiling-mounted alarms should be installed at least 4 inches away from the nearest wall. Wall-mounted alarms should be installed 4 to 12 inches away from the ceiling.

Replace all smoke alarms every 10 years

Consider installing both ionization alarms, which are better at sensing flaming fires, and photoelectric alarms, which are better at sensing slow, smoky fires, or dual sensor alarms.

If you would like to learn more about fire prevention and safety, please visit http://www.safekids.org/safety-basics/safety-resources-by-risk-area/fire-burn-and-scalds/fire-prevention-tips-1.html

How To Save Money With Your Teen Driver

One of the most common questions we get is "How can I save money on my insurance premiums?". This questions is especially relevant to parents of newly licensed drivers. The cost to insure a teen driver can sometimes be an eye-opening experience. There are, however, ways to make sure that you're maximizing your savings opportunities at every turn.

Talk with your agent about discounts for honor roll students. Many insurance policies will give a discount for students who maintain a "B" average or higher on their high school or college reports. Additionally, if you have a college student away at school a great distance away from your home, speak with your agent about potential discounts for this, as well. Finally, discuss with your agent what types of safety and education courses allow for discounts on your policy as well.

Remember, making sure that your teenager is insured on your policy can potentially save thousands in a claim situation. Making sure you're taking advantage of any available discounts can make actually insuring them a more affordable proposition as well!

Back To School Means...

...Lots of things! Whether or not it's a roof leak, a burst pipe, or a sump pump failure, it's important to note how water is generally treated with respect to a homeowner's insurance policy

Water from a pipe or roof leak, depending on the cause and how long since the event began, is typically covered on a homeowner's policy no differently than any other event. It's important to file claims as soon as the damage is noticed, as the length of time since the event began can in some circumstances affect how a company evaluates and treats damage claims.

Sub-surface water backing up from a pump, sewer or drain is typically not automatically covered on a homeowners policy without an additional rider to add coverage for these types of events. If you have a finished basement space, or use your basement for storage, it's very important to discuss how your policy can cover this sort of water event.

Surface water that comes in from a window well, or through another entry area due to heavy rain or an inability of a storm sewer outside to keep up with the volume of water is typically only covered under a flood insurance policy, which is a standalone insurance policy underwritten by the National Flood Insurance Program.

Water which seeps in through a wall or basement floor is typically not covered under any policy available.

Now, every situation is different, so it is very important to discuss with your agent all of the details about how water entered your home. Communication and clarity can help avoid confusion and coverage issues.

PBA Bowling Event

To all our followers out there:

Havlic & Associates will be sponsoring the PBA Midwest Senior Open, and along with that, will be sponsoring the Senior Open Pro Am for both adults and juniors. As society becomes more litigious, even minor auto accidents can result in suit. After an accident is not the time to wonder if you have the correct coverage. Here are some things to consider:

Structure your limits of liability in proportion to your asset level. If you are a homeowner, or have significant assets of other types, consult your agent as far as the appropriate level of liability protection on your auto policy. They will be able to advise as to the best way to protect you and your family.

Consider extended liability coverage. In many circumstances, a stand alone excess liability policy can be written to augment coverage on your autos. Additionally, these policies often will extend beyond just the automobile policy to provide blanket liability coverage.

If you're involved in an accident, do not admit fault at the scene to anyone! Often times statements given at the scene can end up in police reports, which will factor into any liability decision or suit. The best advice is to only describe what you saw from your point of view, and to report the accident right away to your agent.

Remember this above all: your insurance company has a duty to defend you against any suit or claim. This means if you are served with suit papers, contact your insurance company first. They will be responsible for defending any suit related to an auto accident.

Food Spoilage and Power Outages

Severe weather over the past week has left thousands of homes in our area without power in some cases for more than 24 hours. One of the unfortunate consequences of a long term power outage is that food in your refrigerator may be spoiled as a result.

While power outages under 4 hours should have no ill affect on most foods, outages beyond 4 hours can cause food to spoil rapidly. The USDA has a fantastic website which can provide tips on how to try and salvage food in the event of a power outage or flood, and also has a chart which gives you a useful primer on what to keep and what to discard from your refrigerator in the event of a long term loss of power. The chart and more information can be found at http://www.fsis.usda.gov/factsheets/keeping_food_safe_during_an_emergency/index.asp.

If you are one of the many who have been affected by this power outage, please check out the above link. And remember, if there is a question about whether or not something is still good, the old adage of "when in doubt, throw it out" is always a safe choice!

Boating Safety

With the mild spring (hopefully) behind us, and with warmer weather (hopefully) on the horizon, boating can be a fantastic way to spend a warm summer weekend. Between the Chain o' Lakes region and Lake Michigan, as well as various destinations in Wisconsin, there is no shortage of options for boating destinations.

While boating can be a fantastic experience for people of all ages, boating carries along with it the need to act responsibly both as a passenger and driver of a vessel. Here are some tips to stay safe on the water this summer:

Always wear a life jacket. According to the US Coast guard, life jackets could have made a difference in 80% of boating fatalities.

Do not, under any circumstances consume alcohol while operating a boat.

Develop a float plan in case of emergency. A float plan is similar to a flight plan-it includes a description of your boat, who is on board, what safety equipment you have, and where and when you expect to be.

Have your boat checked out by a licensed inspector prior to taking it out on the water.

Take a boating safety course. The United States Coast Guard offers safety courses for various levels of experience. Go to http://www.uscgboating.org/safety/boating_safety_courses_.aspx for more information.

Driving or being a passenger on a boat is little different that being a driver or passenger of a vehicle, and while summer is a great time for fun, following basic safety steps can save the lives of yourself and any passengers out enjoying the water with you.

Should I File A Claim?

Often times, the question of whether or not a claim should be filed will be asked by our clients. As much as we'd like the answers to always be clear cut and straightforward, there are certain situations that may require a careful review of all of the different factors involved.

With auto insurance, looking at the facts surrounding an accident, the type of claim in question, and deductibles applicable can give us guidance on what direction to go. On a property policy, the type of claim and the severity of the damage can also dictate whether or not a claim is appropriate. With certain types of claims having the ability to impact premiums and even, in some cases, eligibility to continue a policy, it's often necessary to fully review the variables before making a decision to proceed.

Having an agent you trust, and an agency that knows the claim process in and out can make a massive difference in how a claim will be handled, or even if a claim is necessary and cost effective. An agent will be able to review your deductibles and any impact on your premiums as a result of filing a claim. If you choose to proceed, they can advise you how long you may be affected rate-wise, or if you are eligible for claim forgiveness packages and policies that they may offer. If you or someone you know is considering filing a claim, speak with your agent to review the facts of the situation. This can save you time and money both in the short and long term.

Travel Safely This Memorial Day Weekend

According to the Illinois State Police, there were 30 fatalities on the roadways during the 2009 Memorial Day weekend, and 757 people were injured. These are sobering, and preventable numbers.

Please remember that no matter how you decide to celebrate the long weekend, please celebrate responsibly. Don't drive distracted-avoid texting and calling, pre-program addresses into your GPS prior to leaving, and above all else, buckle your seat belt. Here in the Chicago area, we are no stranger to severe storms in the summertime. While we aren't technically in "Tornado Alley", in the past our area has seen devastating tornadoes destroy millions in property, and take several lives.

With this in mind, now is a good time to discuss some tips for tornado preparedness.

Look for the signs in the sky. Dark, greenish sky, large hail, and a load roar similar to a freight train are all signs that a tornado may be imminent.

Seek shelter. If you are in a building, go to the basement, storm cellar or lowest below-grade level available. If there is not a below grade area, go to an interior room such as a closet or bathroom away from windows, doors and exterior walls.

If you are in a vehicle, do not attempt to outrun the storm. Get out of your car and find a ditch or depression and cover your head and face. This will help shield you from flying debris.

Some of the wisest things you can do in a storm are discussed beforehand. Discuss a meeting place with your family in case you are separated before or during the storm that can act as a rallying point. Keep bottled water, batteries for radios and canned food in case utilities are knocked out for any length of time. Keep a basic first aid kit. Make sure mobile phones are charged, and have an evacuation plan in case of any long term damage to your home.

Remember, being prepared for the worst can be the best way to avoid panic when disasters of any time strike

How To Choose A Contractor

Whether or not you're faced with a sudden and accidental loss, or beginning a home remodeling project, one of the most critical decisions you will make is how you go about choosing a contractor to handle the job. While most contractors are reputable, a few bad apples can make the entire bunch seem rotten. Here are some tips when searching for a contractor:

Go local. Choose someone who has been in the area for several years and has local roots and ties. Try to avoid companies that set up shop on a seasonal basis-they have little incentive to stand behind their work if they are going to move on to another area in a few months.

Make sure your contractor carries the correct liability insurance and workers compensation. If a contractor does not carry, or says they do not need general liability insurance, stay away. If they then damage your home through carelessness or poor workmanship, you may be left with no recourse. If a worker is injured, you may be responsible for their injuries and medical bills.

Ask for referrals. Sites such as AngiesList.com can be invaluable resources when looking for feedback, as can the recommendations of friends and neighbors.

After choosing your contractor, make sure you have a clear plan and contract in place that outlines schedules for construction, completion and payment.

Repairs to your home-be they claim related or just a project-can be stressful enough, but by taking care to select the best people to manage the process, they can go by much more smoothly.

How To Prep Your Home For Vacation

With spring and summer come vacation season, and along with the travel arrangements, packing and airport itineraries come the responsibilities that come from preparing your home for the time you are away. Protecting your home from fire and theft when you're on a trip can be as simple as taking a few preventative steps to ensure peace of mind.

-Set light timers and tell your neighbors the dates you will be away. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 11.7 million homes experienced a property theft in 2009. By setting light timers, you can give potential burglars pause when they come across your home to find lights on. Additionally, letting your neighbors know the dates of your trip can allow them to keep an eye on any suspicious behavior in your neighborhood, or around your home.

-If you are going to be away for more than 3 days, arrange for your mail and newspapers to be picked up by a friend or family member. This will also help your home appear as though you are there, and help deter any potential theft.

-Run your air conditioner or furnace while you are away, but set the temperature to a higher or lower level than if you were there. During a winter trip, running your furnace can help prevent frozen pipes, and adjusting your thermostat controls can help mitigate the cost of running these systems while you are away.

-Check water faucets and fixtures for leaks, and shut off water valves while you are away. This can help prevent burst pipes and leaks and help avoid major property damage.

-If possible, leave a car in your driveway while you are away. Again, this helps give the appearance of occupancy.

Your home is likely one of your most valuable investments, and the items in it can range from costly to irreplaceable. Taking some simple steps to help prevent loss can help you avoid loss, and gain peace of mind, and isn't that what a vacation should be about?

Daylight Savings Time and Home Maintenence

Aside from losing an hour of sleep and gaining an hour of daylight, moving our clocks up an hour is an excellent time to take some preventative steps to protect your home from losses. Here are some quick tips to help you and your family avoid potential disaster simply, quickly and effectively:

Change the batteries in your smoke detector. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Division, batteries in smoke detectors should be changed at least annually, but it is very common (and recommended by Havlic Insurance) to change the batteries at each time change. It is also advised that you should test the detectors once a month.

Change the air filters in your furnace. After a long winter of using the furnace, your air intakes will have handled all manner of dust and debris. Changing the filters can prevent fire and improve air quality inside your home.

If you have a sump pump, test the battery backup system and make sure the lines are clear. Finished basements are quite expensive investments; protect your investment by being proactive in your water removal maintenance.

Check your roof for damage, and check your gutters for any obstructions. After a winter that saw one major blizzard, and more than a few severe weather events, roofs and gutters this year should be checked. Checking the roof and gutters can confirm that your home is prepared to drain the springtime rains away from your home.

After a long Chicago winter, we're all looking forward to finally spending some time outside. By taking these simple steps, you can make sure your spring and summer are spend leisurely, and not cleaning up after a disaster.

Blizzard Driving Tips

With a severe winter storm headed our way in the next few days, now is a good opportunity to revisit some tips for driving in severe winter weather. These tips are re-posted from FEMA.gov's emergency website (www.fema.gov/hazard/winter/wi_during.shtm#2), and are excellent resources to reference. Remember, unless its an emergency, the best advice is to stay off the roads until they are clear.

Travel in the day, don't travel alone, and keep others informed of your schedule

Stay on main roads; avoid back road shortcuts

If a blizzard traps you in the car:

Pull off the highway. Turn off the hazard lights and hang a distress flag from the radio antenna or window.

Remain in your vehicle where rescuers are most likely to find you. Do not set out on foot unless you can see a building close by where you know you can take shelter. Be careful; distances are distorted by blowing snow. A building may seem close, but be too far to walk in deep snow.

Run the engine and heater about 10 minutes each hour to keep warm. While the engine is running, open a downwind window slightly for ventilation and periodically clear snow from the exhaust pipe. This will protect you from possible carbon monoxide poisoning.

Exercise to maintain body heat, but avoid overexertion. In extreme cold, use road maps, seat covers and floor mats for insulation. Huddle with passengers and use your coat for a blanket.

Take turns sleeping. One person should be awake at all times to look for rescue crews.

Drink fluids to avoid dehydration.

Be careful not to waste battery power. Balance electrical energy needs-the use of lights, heat and radio-with supply.

Turn on the inside light at night so work crews or rescuers can see you.

If stranded in a remote area, stomp large block letters in an open area spelling HELP or SOS and line with rocks or tree limbs to attract the attention of rescue personnel who may be surveying the area by airplane.

Leave the car and proceed on foot-if necessary-once the blizzard passes.

Frozen Pipes

A preventable hazard, frozen pipes can be extremely costly and difficult to clean up from. While pipes tend to be insulated to temperatures as low as 10 degrees, knowing how to properly prevent a frozen pipe, and how to keep a pipe from bursting once frozen can save thousands of dollars, and save you from the headache of the aftermath.

Knowing your plumbing system is a good first step. Tagging water valve shut offs can help you identify where to cut the water supply in the event of a burst pipe. Additionally, turning off the supply at the valve nearest to your outside hose spigot can cut off the most exposed area of piping to the elements. Finally, wrapping your water pipes with thermal wraps can not only keep the pipes warm when the temperature plunges, but it can also save on heating costs by minimizing heat loss as water travels from your water heater throughout your home.

If you suspect a frozen pipe, immediately cut off the water supply to that area of plumbing. Attempt to slowly thaw the frozen section-the best way to thaw it is with a hair dryer or electric heat wrap. Do not take a torch to the pipe. If you discover a slow drip or leak coming from a pipe, that's a sign that you're too late-the pipe has already burst as water begins to melt away.

As with most potential hazards, prevention is the best form of mitigation. If you plan on being away from your home, do not turn your heat off. Keep your thermostat set to 60 degrees, and make sure all storm windows are sealed shut to prevent cold leaks.

Finally, if you do discover water damage due to a burst pipe, don't delay-call your insurance agent right away. Promptly reporting the claim and allowing mitigation professionals to begin the cleanup and dryout process can help minimize the damage to your home and property.

Ice Dams

One of the unfortunate side effects of winter weather is that it creates conditions that can cause damage to your home. One of these conditions is a buildup of snow which, when exposed to the warm air escaping from an attic vent can create cascades of ice coming down from the gutters and edges of your roof. This ice builds up in your gutters, and when the snow melts, the water cannot drain properly. This creates what's called an ice dam.

Ice dams can cause significant damage to walls, ceilings and insulation inside the home, as water seeps inside the structure and wreaks havoc. While masses of icicles dangling from the edge of a roof is the hallmark sign of an issue with attic ventilation, it takes very little moisture to form an ice dam.

Simple home maintenance can help prevent ice dams and subsequent damage to the interior structure. Making sure your attic has adequate insulation and sealing all potential heat leaks is the simplest and most effective way to prevent an ice dam before it starts. Once the dam actually forms, ice melt or snow melt socks, when placed on the roof line near the gutter, can help open up a channel to drain the excess melt safely away from the structure. Finally, making sure gutters and downspouts are clear of leaves, dirt and debris can assist in safely draining water away from your home.

Parking Lot Accidents and the Holidays

The holiday shopping rush is a busy time for consumers and businesses alike. As storefronts, shopping malls and shops see foot traffic reach its annual peak, the parking lots that serve these establishments see a major increase in activity. With inclement weather affecting our area this time of year, parking lots can be the scene of avoidable car accidents.

According to Business Fleet, 14% of all reported auto accidents in 2007 took place in a parking lot. 80% of all bumper scratches happen during parking, and parking lot accidents can average around $1,500 per claim, which can cause insurance rates to rise. Narrow lanes, hurried drivers and blind spots can turn a trip to the store into a headache for drivers who find themselves involved in a collision. While some accidents by nature are not avoidable, there are simple steps to avoiding parking lot collisions that you can take.

Check your mirrors and back out slowly. In parking lots, cars and pedestrians are constantly moving. It is imperative to check all mirrors before leaving any parking space.

Clear your vehicle of snow, ice and other visual impairments. Having a fully clear field of vision can decrease the chance of you not seeing another driver backing out or pulling into a space near you.

Take your time. Don't be in a rush to pull out of a spot. Back out slowly, checking mirrors and looking back through your rear windshield. Proceed at all times with caution.

Park away from the front door. While this may not seem like an appealing option during a Chicagoland winter, parking away from the front door-and away from the majority of the traffic in a parking lot-can help you avoid a collision with a pedestrian or vehicle.

Also remember, if you do have an accident, don't panic. Either call the police to have them fill out a report, or exchange information with the other driver and then contact your agent right away to discuss your options. Following those simple steps, however, may drastically reduce your chances of being in a parking lot accident this holiday season.

Winter Weather Is Here!

It's that time of year again; the time of year when snow, sleet and ice begin to be weekly challenges for drivers in our area. Simple steps can help you avoid accidents and other weather related trouble as winter takes hold.

Slow down and increase your following distance when in traffic. If a driver in front of you has to brake suddenly, you need to make sure you have enough space to stop safely and avoid losing control of your vehicle due to slick conditions.

Clear your car completely of snow and ice. This will make sure your field of vision is clear of any obstructions. Carry an ice scraper in your car and give yourself plenty of time to allow your car to warm up, and to scrape and sweep the snow away from window, headlights, windshields and your hood.

Carry an emergency kit in your trunk. In the event you are stranded for any length of time, an emergency kit can help you wait for help to arrive. Ideally, the kit should include flares, warm clothing including a blanket, extra gloves and hats, and jumper cables.

Winter in Chicagoland can seem like it lasts an eternity, but by planning ahead and driving slowly and safely, you can make it through safely without incident to your destinations.

Deer Mating Season Is Here-What Does This Have To Do With Insurance?

As the seasons change here in the Chicagoland area, the hazards on the road change right along with them. From ice and snow in the winter to construction hazards in the summer, there's always something to look out for on the road. This time of year, deer mating season begins, and with it comes along the need to watch out in wooded or lightly populated areas.

Deer mating season typically runs from late October through December, but mid to late November is the peak, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Cook and Lake counties are both in the top ten in reported collisions annually, and with fewer wooded areas as a natural habitat, deer can be flushed out onto roads where they can be difficult to spot, especially at night.

After dusk and near sunrise tend to be the times where deer are most active, so it's important to watch the road at all times and maintain a safe speed, especially in wooded areas or areas with light populations. Some tips to help you stay safe:

The single best way to avoid an accident is to be aware of the surroundings. Pay attention to deer crossing signs, and scan the roadsides for the “eyeshine” of deer (reflection of headlights in the deer’s eyes).

At night, use high-beam lights when appropriate. This may allow the deer to be seen a few seconds earlier, giving the driver enough time to avoid an accident.

Deer often use woodlots, fencerows, field edges or areas near water. Extra caution is needed when these habitats are close to roadways.

Slow down around curves in areas where deer are known to occur.

Slow down and prepare to stop if a deer is along the side of the road. There are likely more deer nearby. Deer will often follow one another single file across a road. Trying to cross through the middle of such a group often results in deer colliding with the side of the vehicle.

Be prepared for the unexpected. Deer may stop in the middle of the road or decide to double back to the side of the road. Hard pavement such as concrete or asphalt provides poor traction for the hard and sharp hooves of deer. They may even fall down.

If there are deer near the road, and there are no vehicles close behind, slow down, honk the vehicle’s horn in short bursts and flash the headlights.

If deer are near the road, tap the brakes or use the emergency flashers to alert other drivers. Prepare to safely stop if the deer move toward the roadway.

If there are deer on or approaching the road, do not slam on the brakes or swerve sharply to avoid the deer. It is instinctual to do this, but doing so may cause a loss of control of the vehicle and a more severe accident.

Never tailgate! Always leave plenty of room between vehicles. Many severe deer vehicle accidents are caused when another vehicle becomes involved.

If you do happen to hit a deer, make sure you inform the police at once. Make sure you don't attempt to move or attend to the injured deer in the roadway, as this could put you at risk . Call your insurance agent right away so they can begin the process of having your car looked at and repaired.

Finally, if you enjoy venison and know a butcher in your area, the state does allow motorists to "claim" a deer hit on the road for purposes of consumption. So should this unfortunate incident occur, you can at least feel comforted by this silver lining.

Bundle Your Insurance To Save Money

Financial austerity is big these days. Governments, companies and individuals are looking for new and innovative ways to cut their costs and trim their budgets. Where to stay, who to call, and how will my insurance company take care of me will likely be in the front of your mind in the immediate aftermath of a severe loss to your property. One thing you will not necessarily be considering is how to account for your possessions that may have been lost or damaged. To counter this, we recommend a full household inventory, to be updated once annually.

While most people are able to recall the major items in their home-what kind of television or computer they have, the brand of appliance or where they bought their couch-the majority of the items you have in your home may not be simple to recall. Books, CD's, DVD's and clothing tend to be major line items that can add up to large amounts of money, and are not as easily remembered as larger items. Other items like kitchenware and decor can also be expensive to replace.

During a home inventory, it's best to go room-by-room with a legal pad and a digital camera. You can go room by room, taking pictures of the larger items and writing down basic information on the smaller items. You can assign a basic value for media items like books, DVD's and CD's, which can serve as a basis for settling out a loss. If you like, you can also list titles, which can determine exactly how much value you have in these items. For the larger items, along with the photo, you may want to write down model and serial numbers.

Once completed, you can call your agent to discuss how best to proceed. After determining the appropriate amount of coverage for your personal property, your agent should be able to keep a copy of your photos and inventory in your file at the office, meaning in case of loss, your records will be kept safely and soundly where they can be sent to the adjuster when necessary.

Taking the time to inventory your personal property can save you time and headache at a time where you may have a lot on your plate. Don't delay-take the time today!

College Apartments & Renters Insurance

Back to school is approaching fast, and for those of you with children away at college or university, you may have questions about how best to insure their possessions while away. Theft is usually the main concern that parents have. Thinking about how much it would cost to replace a laptop or musical instrument can add to the parental anxiety that usually accompanies a child going away.

While possessions in dormitories and residence halls are generally covered under a parents' property policy, when the student moves into an apartment with roommates, renters insurance is strongly recommended. Aside from providing coverage for their clothing, computers, iPod and other personal possessions, renters insurance provides them with critical coverage for their personal liability.

According to the NFPA, in 2006 fire departments responded to 4,290 fires in campus housing. These fires caused an estimated $29.1 million dollars in property damage. Since two-thirds of all college students live in non-dormitory housing, the need for these students to protect themselves financially is critical.

In years past, most college students went without any form of insurance to protect themselves in the event their unit was damaged due to fire. Thus, if the student's apartment was damaged, landlords could file suit to collect damages and the student could find themselves with a judgement against them for thousands of dollars.

In recent years, more and more apartment complexes are requiring their tenants to carry renters insurance with liability coverage. However, not all college campus apartments carry this requirement. The onus then falls on the parents to make sure their student is fully protected while living in off campus housing.

The good news is that renters insurance is extremely affordable. For premiums usually less than $1 per day, you and your student can rest more easily, knowing that they are correctly covered and protected.

Making sure your student carries renters insurance can help with the short term concerns of how to replace possessions, and also help avoid the long term financial consequences of fire or other unintentional property damage.

Beating The Heat Safely

The recent weather in our area has featured high humidity, high temperatures and abundant sunshine with little rain. With summer at its height, people around our area are looking for ways to beat the heat. Swimming pools, dog parks, trampolines, boating and other outdoor activities are popular ways to enjoy the summer.

Swimming pools in particular are popular ways for families to beat the heat. With swimming pools, however, it is important to keep safety in mind at all times. According to the CDC, in 2007 there were 3,443 accidental drownings in the United States, which averages out to about ten per day. At least one out of five fatal drowning victims are children aged 14 and younger.

Following simple safety steps can help prevent tragedy. If you have a pool on your property, be sure to secure access to the pool via a fence with a lock or other pool barrier. Keep the area well lit at night, with safety and rescue gear available nearby, and make sure to never allow young children to swim unattended or near the pool unsupervised. Keep your pool area clear of balls and other toys, as this can prevent children from entering the pool area unsupervised, or leaning over the water to grab a ball.

If you take your children swimming, make sure to not rely on air-filled or foam toys as primary sources of safety gear. Most swim toys such as noodles and water wings are not designed to be safety flotation devices. Life jackets for younger children are recommended. If your child is preschool-aged, an adult should be within reach of a child at all times. Older children should have a swim buddy and never swim without adult supervision. Adults, when supervising, should not engage in distracting behavior such as mowing the lawn or playing cards. Finally, enrolling your child in formal swim lessons can teach them both how to swim, and how to act responsibly and safely around bodies of water.

If you have a swimming pool, make sure to protect yourself. Talk with your agent about ways to prevent risk ,and properly cover yourself in case of accident. By engaging in simple safety steps, you and your family can avoid risk and injury to yourselves and others, and safely enjoy summer weather.

The Importance of Policy Reviews

One of the most common concerns consumers of any service have is cost. Customers deserve and demand quality products and services at market-competitive prices, and one of the most important jobs of an insurance professional is to strike a balance between benefit and cost.

The most effective way to ensure that you are receiving both from your insurance package is to schedule a full policy review with your agent. Sitting down in person and reviewing the current setup, and discussing important life events such as birthdays, graduations, and retirements in order to identify possible necessary changes can save you and your family time, stress, and money.

During a policy review, an agent will discuss current coverage and suggest adjustments that can prove critical should the unexpected occur. Additionally, if you and your family are looking to trim the budget, your agent can look closely at your discounts, to make sure every possible option is explored.

Policy reviews can ensure that you and your family have the coverages you need at a cost you can afford. Don't leave yourself with a coverage gap! Call your agent today and schedule a time to meet and discuss your policies!

The Benefits Of Working With An Agent

The insurance marketplace has become an extremely competitive environment over the past decade. The emergence of carriers that conduct their business almost exclusively via call center or Internet has highlighted the need for agencies to demonstrate their value in new ways.

While the premium difference one can occasionally see by choosing an online-based carrier is one factor to consider, working with a local agent can provide substantial benefits beyond simply premium costs to you and your family.

Local agents can be helpful with the claim process. A good agent can walk you through the process step-by-step, keeping you informed of your options and addressing any questions or needs that arise. Given that an insurance claim is the biggest moment of truth you can have with a carrier, there is significant value in dealing with the same person throughout, rather than a call center team.

Additionally, the relationship with a local agent can assist during aspects of the billing process as well. An involved local agent can identify discounts that could help save you money, can identify potential rate changes and work with you to find solutions that both fit in your budget and provide proper coverage for you and your family.

Finally, working with a local agent can provide you peace of mind. A local agent is able to know you and your family beyond a policy number, and is able to know your family's unique needs. They can grow with you and your family, and you can rest assured knowing that when you call to ask a question, file a claim, or pay a bill, you are more than just a number on a screen.

If You Are Involved In A Car Accident...

...Here are some tips:

-Do not admit fault!

-Call the police! Having the police issue an incident report and information exchange form can be immensely helpful during the claim process. It can also ensure that the facts of the accident are recorded by a third party.

-If you feel hurt in any way, shape or form, seek medical care. Remember, cars can be fixed quite easily in time, but taking risks with your health is not the best course of action!

-Contact your agent. Explain what happened and be prepared to write down claim information, such as the claim number and your adjuster's name and contact information. According to the Chicago Sun-Times on May 25th, home values in Illinois have decreased over the past two years, and only recently began to experience their first increase in value. With the loss in market value, people everywhere are looking to save money where they can, and attention often turns to the amount of coverage clients carry on their home.

One thing to keep in mind when evaluating a homeowners insurance policy is that there is not necessarily a correlative relationship between a home's market value, and the cost to rebuild a home. Remember that homeowners insurance primarily covers the construction cost of a home due to a named peril. An insurance company calculates the replacement cost of a home based on factors such as construction quality, materials used, square footage and the type of home. We use those metrics as well other factors to determine what it would cost to rebuild your home in the event of a catastrophe.

The market value of a home, however, is not entirely based on concrete measurables. It can factor in location, school district, the size and value of the lot, and the local economy. One could take the same home, put it in ten different towns or cities around the area, and likely have ten very different market values. The reconstruction cost, however, will not have as much variance to it, as the cost of building materials won't vary too greatly between, say, Wilmette and Gurnee.

The best course of action when trying to determine the appropriate amount of coverage for your home is to consult your agent. We can always run through our cost estimators and work with you to find an amount of coverage that you can be comfortable with, and one that will protect your greatest investment.

Prom Season and Teen Driving

Spring means prom season time and along with prom season comes the need for families to be aware of the risks that young drivers face. Statistically, Springtime is the most deadly month for young drivers, with the months of May and June being the highest risk times. Additionally, Saturday-the usual night chosen for proms by schools in the area-is the highest risk day of the week, with the majority of incidents taking place between 9pm and 6am.

When you add in all of the external factors that can raise the risk of accident during prom season-distraction from passengers, risk of alcohol and fatigue, it becomes extremely important that parents stress safety during prom. Here are some tips for parents to keep in mind when discussing the responsibility of safe driving:

Celebrate the accomplishment of getting a drivers license, but also discuss the responsibility that comes with it.

Be parental! Provide guidelines, establish rules, and uphold the consequences for breaking the rules.

Don't rush the learning process. Be patient and allow your teen plenty of time to acclimate him or her to driving at different times of day, and in different conditions.

Practice what you preach! Leading by example is a powerful tool. If your teen driver sees you driving responsibly, under control and within the rules of the road, this sets a positive example for him or her to follow.

There is, of course, no substitute for experience on the road, but laying a solid foundation of driving fundamentals for your teen can make a massive difference.

Distracted Driving

Nearly everyone these days has a cell phone, and regardless if you primarily use the phone to talk, or to text, one thing that is for certain is that using the phone while driving is an extremely risky proposition.

Roads, especially in our area, are busy at nearly all times of the day, so its wise to stay focused on the task of driving instead of answering a call or a message. Various institutions have been studying this issue for the past several years. Here are a few facts regarding distracted driving:

Driving while using a cell phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37% (Carnegie Mellon)

Nearly 6,000 people died in crashes involving a distracted driver, and more than half a million were injured. (NHTSA)

The younger, inexperienced drivers under 20 years old have the highest proportion of distraction-related fatal crashes. (NHTSA)

Drivers who use hand held devices are four times as likely to have a crash serious enough to injure themselves. (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety)

Using a cell phone while driving-either hand-held or hands-free-delays a driver's reactions as much as having a BAC of .08%. (University of Utah)

There is enough evidence in academia to show a direct causation between distraction and risk of serious accident. Remember, when in the car, your first and most important priority is to operate the vehicle safely.

Between endless road construction, animals, weather and other drivers, there are plenty of hazards on the road without adding a degree of difficulty for yourself. Remember to stay focused-it could save your life!

Become A Fan On Facebook!

Good morning everyone!

If you are a Facebook user, don't forget to look for our fan page under Havlic & Associates! He or she may be able to identify opportunities for additional savings through new discounts and changing deductibles or coverages.

Rate increases are certainly not ideal, but with good communication with your agent, they can often be mitigated.

Welcome To The Havlic Insurance Blog!

Welcome to the official Havlic Insurance blog!

Over the coming weeks and months, we're going to be bringing you some exciting content!
